[Originals] Battery - the basics of use
The battery is the heart of an electric bike and knowing how to look after it can be decisive. Here's our guide to expert battery care for an eMTB.
Most electric bikes work with a 36 or 48 volt transmission system. First of all, make sure you have the right charger and that it works effectively. If you buy an electric bike online, you should be more cautious, as batteries can end up in shipping containers and warehouses for a long time and not receive proper care.
How many kilometers can I do on a full charge?
Generally speaking, between 40km and 120km. There are several factors that influence range. First of all, the capacity of the battery, the terrain (the rougher it is, the shorter the range), the level of engine assistance (more assistance, higher consumption), the weight and physical condition of the rider, etc.
How many years does a battery last?
Battery life is measured more in charge cycles than in years. You can expect between 500 and 1000 cycles. In years, between 3 and 10 years. Full discharges should be avoided frequently.
Is it bad to leave it connected to the charger after it's been charged?
The vast majority of the latest battery chargers are designed to stop charging as soon as the battery is full. If, for example, you usually leave it charging overnight, you don't need to worry about unplugging it as soon as the charge is complete. But you shouldn't leave it on the charger for days at a time either, as this can put some stress on the battery and shorten its lifespan.
Does the cold affect the battery's performance?
Yes, the cold affects the battery's performance. It reduces its capacity and therefore its autonomy. It's good practice to store the battery in a warmer place when it's not in use. This loss of capacity is recovered as soon as it is in a warmer environment.
What level of charge is suitable for storing the battery if it is not going to be used for long periods?
Around 50% charge is recommended. Fully charged or completely discharged increases the stress on the battery cells and consequently shortens its useful life.
Is the battery addictive?
No. Current batteries do not suffer from the memory effect. Small charges do not affect performance. However, over time the battery slowly begins to lose capacity. The service life can be extended with a few precautions, such as not letting it discharge completely too often or keeping it in a moderate temperature environment.
Battery maintenance
In addition to the good practices already mentioned, periodically check the condition and cleanliness of the connections. All batteries are not the same and differ in their technology, so follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
