[Originals] Which of FOX's heavyweights to choose?
One day you won't believe me for repeating this, but we really are lucky!
An unpleasant event generated a chain of events. It became an opportunity not only to compare 2 excellent shock absorbers, but also to prove 2 issues that are worth gold to us who love this sport:
- a good mechanic is worth gold
- the brands' after-sales service builds loyalty (even when things don't go well).
My Specialized Turbo Levo Carbon Expert Gen3 was equipped with a FOX Float X2 Factory which, as you know, is an excellent shock absorber but is notorious for not being the shock absorber that gives the least problems, even for those who do timely checks like me.
Recently my bike started being maintained by the great Maurício Gouveia (@mauricio.f.gouveia) from @sweetspotcycles. During a periodic check-up of the whole bike, he detected a problem with my X2 Float, which, although not serious, would destroy the shock in the long run. He quickly contacted FOX to have it assessed and repaired under warranty and ... this is the best part, he fitted a FOX DHX2 (from his personal stock) so that I wouldn't be stranded.
In other words... better than being able to compare Air vs. Spring, I was able to compare on the same bike, the alternative solution that the brand that sells the most suspensions and dampers offers in the 2 configurations. In layman's terms, it's more or less like this.... I used to go out with Margot Robbie and for a few months I was able to go out with Zoe Saldaña. It's nothing like this... but man, just humor me while you read this.
Exploring aggressive trails on an electric bike is a unique experience, and the choice of shock absorber plays a crucial role in that journey. So let's dive into this duel of shock absorbers from the same brand to find out which one dominated in the end on the Turbo Levo Generation 3.
FOX Float X2 Factory: Fun for all tastes.
The Float X2 Factory is a performance masterpiece, especially when descending and jumping is the name of the game. With its double air chamber, it offers precise customization of compression and rebound, providing an immediate response to the challenges of the terrain. At Levo this shock absorber is like a magic carpet, absorbing all irregularities and allowing the rider to descend with confidence and control, but at the same time allowing them to maintain a lively and playful rear.
When it comes to steep descents and technical trails, the Float X2 Factory guarantees excitement.
FOX DHX2: All-wheel drive.
On the other hand, the DHX2 is a shock absorber that stands out for its versatility. The more aggressive and steeper the trail, the better it behaves (Sintra, the boy loves Sintra). Developed to offer performance in a variety of situations, this shock is like a suspension chameleon. With precise compression and rebound settings, it doesn't have the customization of its "pumped-up brother" due to the spring, but the DHX2 provides a solid platform throughout the trail while maintaining unusual traction and when it comes to jumping, it owes nothing to anyone.
When it came to tackling the challenging descents, the DHX2 didn't disappoint. Its quick responsiveness and exceptional control ensured a thrilling experience, especially on the most technical terrain. This shock is a solid choice for anyone looking for efficient uphill traction and thrilling descents on a progressive bike.
Verdict:
When directly comparing the Float X2 Factory and the DHX2 on the Specialized Turbo Levo Generation 3, the choice will always depend on the rider's individual preferences. But for your friend who likes a less "planted" bike, the Float X2 Factory is my choice and if you're like me, this shock will take you to trail nirvana (until it breaks down again, you know). However, if you value versatility and traction and want a shock absorber that can take on any challenge with confidence, the DHX2 is the sensible choice.
Both shock absorbers take the Turbo Levo Generation 3 to great heights of performance, ensuring that every ride is an adventure.
But don't forget, the next time you ride, whatever shock you have fitted to your bike, the trails are to be conquered. What matters more than the equipment is RIDING A BIKE!
Note: FOX repaired my shock absorber free of charge, it took a while but they were impeccable and Mauricio from SweetSpotCycles is gold!
